Through The Ferns

When a familiar location starts to feel too familiar, sometimes the answer isn't to find a different subject. It's to find a different way of looking at it.

Pre-Flight Checks

Early morning light, a quiet stretch of water, and an Egyptian Goose apparently making sure everything is in working order before beginning the day.

Pine Lake - Photographing Tasmania's Central Highlands

Photography comes with plenty of technical rules, but sometimes the best solution is simply the one that works. At Pine Lake, that meant putting aside my usual approach and trying something different even though it meant bending the rules.

The Hunter's Perch

Wildlife photography isn't always about getting closer. Sometimes the better photograph comes from stepping back, watching for patterns, and giving your subject enough space to tell the rest of the story.

Reading the Waves

Long exposure photography isn't simply about slowing the shutter down. It's about learning to read the rhythm of the ocean and recognising the moment before the photograph happens.

Hunter Becomes the Hunted - Photographing Wildlife In Your Backyard

A quiet winter evening, a pair of feeding starlings, and a surprise visit from a Southern Boobook Owl. Sometimes the most memorable wildlife encounters happen just outside your own front door.

Where the Cave Breathes - Cave Photography at Caveside, Mole Creek

Some places don't reveal themselves easily. Hidden beneath the forest, the Honeycomb Caves reward those willing to slow down, climb carefully, and follow the light into the darkness.

Finding the Extraordinary in the Ordinary - Waterfall Photography

Some of the most rewarding photographs aren't made at famous locations. They're found in the quiet places we almost walked straight past.

Between Two Icons - Photographing Vivid Sydney

Vivid Sydney is a celebration of light, colour and movement, but capturing that energy in a single frame is almost impossible. Sometimes the best way to tell the story is to build it from many moments.

Edge of Endurance - Photographing the Granite Coastline of Grants Point, Tasmania

What began as a scouting trip for future Milky Way photography turned into an unexpected sunrise image, where weathered granite, moving water, and soft morning light combined to create a scene that felt far older than the moment itself.

Watcher in Stone - Waterfall Photography at Liffey Valley

Discover the hidden charm of Skull Rock—a serene corner along the Liffey Falls Track where nature's beauty unfolds in quiet perfection.

Forest Watcher - Forest Photography Composition

Weathered Silence - Bridport Pier

Sometimes the strongest images come from doing less - letting structure and subtlety carry the frame rather than chasing drama.

Central Plateau - 'Gnarled'

On Tasmania’s Central Plateau, I transformed a simple tree into an art piece, blending blurs and masks for sky and foreground perfection.

'Ember Falls' - St Columba Falls, Long Exposure Waterfall Photography

Sometimes the most powerful way to photograph a place isn’t to step back and capture it all, but to move closer and find the smaller stories unfolding within it.

Liffey Falls - Long Exposure Waterfall Photography

Liffey Falls in Tasmania’s forested highlands offers a beautiful example of tiered waterfall photography. On this visit the goal was simple: frame the layered cascades within the surrounding forest and use the trees to bring structure and depth to the composition.

Grant's Point - Coastal Long Exposure Photography

Grant’s Point on Tasmania’s rugged coastline is one of those places where the landscape quietly arranges itself into a photograph. On this morning walk along the shore, a pair of lichen-covered rocks sitting above the tide line caught my eye and became the centrepiece for a long exposure image. By combining two exposures, one for the moving sky and one for the water flowing through kelp and boulders, the final image captures the sense of movement and stillness that makes coastal landscape photography so rewarding. Moments like this are exactly the kind of scenes we explore when learning landscape photography in the wild landscapes of Tasmania.

Tasmania Landscape Photography Locations: A Field Guide

Tasmania is one of the most rewarding places in the world for landscape photography. From rugged coastlines and ancient forests to alpine lakes and dramatic mountain ranges, the island offers an incredible variety of photographic opportunities. This guide highlights some of the locations I regularly explore while photographing Tasmania’s landscapes. Each location includes a short overview along with links to detailed blog posts showing how the images were captured. Many of these places are also visited during my Tasmanian photography tours and lessons, where we explore composition, lighting, and long exposure techniques in real-world conditions.
